Just an Acquaintance

He was NBA-player height

converted to Judaism to marry

(I later learned)

He and his long-haired wife

had a tall son our daughter’s age

They invited us to a Sukkot gathering

—the only time I’ve been in a sukkah

Another night in a back yard

at another couple’s anniversary party

the two of them sang in harmony

Darling Companion

At first I remembered the song

just now as What Am I Living For

(If Not for You)?

Years after that duet,

years after they’d divorced,

we read in the paper

he’d been killed by a train
